Since moving to Edinburgh I really try to support indie shops wherever I can. I particularly like and try to support indie bookshops – there are some real gems scattered around Edinburgh that make for excellent browsing, especially on rainy days.
This small, second hand bookshop is a book-lovers dream. It is absolutely busting with books- perfect if you fancy taking your time and having a browse. The books are not always in the best condition but they are reasonably priced and there is such an incredible selection to choose from- you are bound to find a book or two that you like! A real hidden gem in the heart of Edinburgh.
This radical bookshop located in West Nicolson Street, Edinburgh is another great shop to have a browse in and is the home of Word Power books. They celebrate diversity of thought and expression, and encourage readers to engage with ideas both from the margins and mainstream. They have a quirky and varied selection of books and hold monthly events in their shop- well worth checking out if you are in Edinburgh Old Town.
The Golden Hare is a gorgeous bookshop, located in St. Stephen Street, Edinburgh. The booksellers are really friendly and they have a beautifully curated selection of books available. Apart from selling books it also has its own blog, podcast and holds regular events, including its own book group!
Inside the shop, they have a magazine section, a books of the month section and a table with international acclaimed books and classics. There’s also a children’s section at the back of the shop and they do Sunday stories, read by their Storyteller, Elspeth Chapman, which lasts 45 mins and is completely free!
It’s definitely worth popping in and taking a look at their books- although they also have a very good website, which you can browse here. Stuck for inspiration? Check out their Bookseller Picks here.
What are your favourite indie bookshops? I’d love to hear from you!
